Learn about your taxes – A new online learning tool empowering Canadians to do their taxes
15 February 2022
The CRA has launched Learn about your taxes. This online interactive learning tool is designed to help Canadians learn about taxes, benefits and credits, and how to complete their income tax and benefit return.
Canadians have said they need help understanding how to do their taxes. Following public consultations, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) identified the need to fill a knowledge gap around the role and value of taxes among young Canadians.
The CRA has launched a new online learning tool to address this gap:
Learn about your taxes
We encourage you to check out this new tool and share
Learn about your taxes
when speaking with community members or your organizations’ clients! The interactive tool will help them understand why we pay taxes, how to read paystubs and slips, which documents they need to do their taxes, different ways to file an income tax and benefit return and more!
What is Learn about your taxes?
Learn about your taxes
is designed to help Canadians learn about taxes, benefits and credits and how to complete their income tax and benefit return. The tool is aimed at students, individuals who have never done their taxes before and new residents; but the content is helpful for all Canadians. There are also resources, like lesson plans and activity ideas, for educators to teach their students about tax literacy.
The first version of the online learning tool, launched in November 2021, focuses mainly on content for high school students. More material is in development for the 2022 tax season.
Here’s how it works
Currently, the online learning tool is divided into three sections: “Starting to work,” “Preparing to do your taxes,” and “Completing a basic tax return.” Learners will better understand the Canadian tax system by using the lessons and watching videos. They can also interact with the material, testing their knowledge with exercises and quizzes. New content will be added to the online learning tool in the coming weeks and will include topics such as “Using My Account,” and “Purpose of taxes”.
We would appreciate any feedback on
Learn about your taxes
. We welcome any suggestions to make the tool more helpful for Canadians.
