The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) provides low- and moderate-income individuals and families with free, reliable assistance in filing federal tax returns every year. It is a critical program that ensures that vulnerable Canadians receive the credits and benefits designed to support them. CVITP volunteers prepare income tax and benefit returns for eligible individuals with modest income, a simple tax situation, and who are not able to prepare and file their return themselves. Many community agencies rely on the CVITP to refer clients for assistance with the filing of prior and current tax returns. It is voluntarily developed and administered by organizations throughout Canada, despite very little funding to agencies for this support to the community. Prosper Canada thanks the United Way of Canada - Centraide Canada for supporting our work in partnership with a network of 15 community-based non-profit Financial Empowerment Champions (FEC) to deliver critical financial empowerment (FE) services that build the financial wellbeing of vulnerable Canadians, in particular, helping them with the resources and capacity required to provide tax filing help in their communities. These collaborative efforts, helps to advance Canada’s FE field by expanding awareness of the role of tax filing and benefits navigation in reducing poverty and advocating for policies and programs that improve Canadians’ financial security.
