November is Financial Literacy Month: Helping Canadians understand their finances
30 October 2020
November is Financial Literacy Month (FLM) which means there will be a variety of helpful money management webinars, virtual events, and outreach activities, to help Canadians better manage their money. The fact that the 10th Anniversary of FLM is happening amidst a pandemic, adds even more importance for the need to help Canadians understand their finances. COVID-19, is increasingly threatening the financial well-being of a broader cross-section of Canadians, not just those living on low-incomes. With over eight million Canadians losing their jobs or seeing a drop in earned income due to COVID-19 and with a second COVID wave upon us, helping households to minimize insolvencies, debt and reliance on savings, has never been more important.
Canadians need support and they need it now. Financial Literacy Month shines a spotlight on
organizations and resources
from across the country working tirelessly to help improve the financial lives of Canadians.
The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada
(FCAC) has put together a robust month of events and provided resources and tools to help Canadians and the organizations that support them to:
Manage money and debt
Save for the future
Understand their financial rights and responsibilities
This November we’ll be shining a light on the efforts of our extraordinary partners across the country, who are working to help Canadians manage debt, save more, tax-file, access benefits, problem solve and ultimately, manage their money day to day.
The financial impacts of COVID-19 have tentacles in all areas of our lives. We know without a doubt there is more work to be done. November is an opportunity to dig into all the ways in which organizations serving vulnerable Canadians can help support the people they serve who are now facing complex financial decisions unlike never before. We continue to work diligently with partners to provide appropriate support and resources, create new and/or adapted services where there is need. We are committed to removing barriers and to building the financial security, and resilience of Canadians.
We encourage everyone to attend the
FLM virtual launch event
on Monday November 2nd, 10:00 am EST and take advantage of the plethora of
resources
shared by FCAC. The
Financial Literacy Database
allows you to find resources, events and tools all related to budgeting, money management, savings and taxes from across the country.
