ABC Life Literacy Canada launches Money Matters for Indigenous Peoples program across Canada
20 February 2018
ABC Life Literacy Canada
launched the
Money Matters for Indigenous Peoples
program nationally in 2017, following a successful pilot program in Ontario in 2016. Since then, Money Matters for Indigenous Peoples has reached 1,976 learners through 141 workshops.
Money Matters is a free introductory financial literacy program for adult learners. The program’s primary aim is to help learners build confidence in their ability to manage finances and work to achieve their financial goals. The program covers four basic concepts: budgeting and spending plans, banking basics, credit and borrowing, and a savings unit which focuses on basic savings, Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs) and the Canada Learning Bond.
To create the Indigenous Peoples program, the Money Matters core program was reviewed by a program steering committee and the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health based in Ottawa. ABC kept the core components of the program, but adapted the stories and examples used to better relate with Indigenous learners. Wabano also commissioned an artist to help redesign program materials. Once completed, Indigenous volunteers working for TD Bank Group reviewed the program, alongside two Indigenous literacy instructors.
In addition to the Money Matters for Indigenous Peoples, ABC also runs Money Matters Core programming, Money Matters for Newcomers and New Canadians, Money Matters for Post-Secondary Students and Money Matters Online. Money Matters has reached more than 10,000 learners since inception in 2011.
