Researching Canada’s household financial vulnerability problem

13 September 2017
Prosper Canada has received funding from the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) to carry out the following three research initiatives that will help public, private, and non-profit sector stakeholders shed light on household financial vulnerability in Canada, and what to do about it.

  1. Launch a national financial health mapping tool: In partnership with the Canadian Council on Social Development, Prosper Canada will develop and launch the innovative Neighbourhood Financial Health Index mapping tool across Canada, enabling users to see and explore the spatial distributers and drivers of financial health and vulnerability across their community.
  2. Host a symposium on understanding financial vulnerability of Canadian households: Prosper Canada will bring together public sector, financial sector, academic and non-profit experts in a full-day symposium to explore how we can work together to better understand and address growing financial vulnerability of Canadian households.
  3. Conduct research on the pathways to financial security: The Pathways to Financial Security research initiative will map and critically analyze the effects of disruptors such as income volatility, student debt, etc., on key life milestones for Canadians over the last 30 years in Canada.
Key findings from these three initiatives above will be used to inform and advise financial educators in Canada about critical changes in the financial lives of Canadians and how they can adapt current financial education content and approaches to build and maintain Canadians’ financial well-being.

Prosper Canada is excited to mount these research initiatives to mobilize policy-makers, researchers, businesses, and not-profit organizations to take a deeper look at root causes and solutions for Canadians’ household financial health.
